And sure to create many of the Bologna Vials before getting the skill down to make glasses that do not shatter.
I made a similar discovery while camping. I stared at a glass bottle melting in the fire pit. Then I had a cool idea to make a glass pile. I melted about a dozen glass bottles together. In the morning I cooled off my creation rather quickly by dumping a ton of water on it, and found that it was very brittle.

I think the whole point, is to heat up just the bottom, so the top half remains in a solid state.
Though I agree that it is a science experiment turned into a magic effect....The use of it as a magic effect is certainly an origional idea perhaps???? Possibly started as a prank in a classroom somewhere.
Being origional, I half to respect that. Is he the only one making/selling such a bottle out there though?

Yeah, something like that. And they do start with off-the-shelf normal bottles. Coke bottles, usually, but they left them out of the demo videos to avoid legal hassles with the Coca-Cola company.

This particular variant on the bologna bottle is original, as is the method (whatever it is) of converting bottles. According to them, it started out as an idea for adapting bologna bottle behavior to existing bottles in order to make an illusion out of it. Took over a year of trial and error to get the process right.

For now, yes, and they are trying their best to legally commit all of their $1,000-entry-fee customers to keep it that way! I'm sure if I paid that much, you'ld have a hard time prying the secret process out of me. Especially if I could do it for $5 a bottle, and you couldn't do it at all. It's a powerful incentive.
Now, obviously, someone else could come up with the same or a similar method and give them some competetion. (Hope they have the sense not to sell any to Rob Stiff or anyone else at Magic Makers! But MM could always buy one through an agent, unfortunately.) The makers of the Devil's Coke Bottle are working on getting it patented, I understand. They had better hurry.

I just wanted to chime in and say you're right, it is not the same as a bologna bottle. It's many times safer. Oddly, it implodes rather than explodes and no one I know has been hit by any shard of glass. (I've seen it done many dozens of times.)
Also, maybe even more important, it's reliable unlike other bottles that are just heated up and cooled down quickly. Penn and Teller had 10 or more bottles in one effect, and they all popped on cue. Pretty cool!
Having no duds is QUITE important.
There demo video is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMEmR-grjNA
$1000 for one effect "ain't" cheap, but this one does seem to deliver.
I'm still waiting for someone to REALLY dial in what will become the definitive performance. I feel like those I've seen so far just looked gimmicky, and I know someone's going to nail "the"effect with this eventually.
As we all know, the presentation is SO much more important than the method! |
